Local Family Double at Keswick

Local Family Double Victory The 8th International Lakeland Trails Festival in Keswick on Saturday 7th September, was a huge success, with Keswick AC's husband and wife team Russell and Pippa Maddams, celebrating the birth of their six month old daughter in style, by winning both the men's and women's 15km Derwentwater Trail Race. Nationally renowned samba drumming band, Batala Lancaster, got everyone pumping with adrenaline before the starts, and over 1000 competitors from all over the world, took part in the various events during the day. Russell Maddams, Keswick AC, won the blue riband 15km Derwentwater Trail Race in 56.17. Runner up was John French, Eden Runners, in 57.59 and making the podium in third place was Steve McCarron, sale Harriers in 60.01. Former British Fell Running Champion, Pippa Maddams, Keswick AC, was an easy winner of the women's race, finishing an amazing 21st place overall in 67.29 only six weeks after the birth of her first child. Runner up was North Allerton's, Hannah Phillips in 70.47, with Charlotte Wilson, Liverpool Harriers in 73.23 Oldest competitor in the race was 80 year old Malcolm Ball, from Norfolk, who won the Veteran 70 and Veteran 80 category in the 15km race. Representatives from 13 different nations took part in the event, including USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland. In the morning's 10km Derwentwater Trail Run, another local athlete, Phil Winskill, Keswick AC, won the men's race in 33.57, and Helen Woodley, from Ulverston, winning the women's race in 42.50 More than 50 children took part in the Fun Trails, all receiving a special finisher's medal. The event was supporting the regional charity Nurture Lakeland and Fix The Fells, along with many national charities benefitting from runners raising funds through sponsorship.
