Sunshine, TV stars and samba on the Lakeland Trails in Keswick Gorgeous late summer sunshine greeted over 1200 competitors in the 9th International Lakeland Trails Festival in Keswick on Saturday 6th September, including television stars Kelly Adams and Katie Lyons. The London actresses star in the hit BBC3 comedy drama Bluestone 42, with Kelly running in the 15km Race, Katie in the 10km event and other members of the Bluestone 42 cast were seen in Keswick over the weekend. Nationally renowned samba drumming band, Batala Lancaster, got everyone pumping with adrenaline before the starts, and competitors from all over the world took part in the various events during the day. Ben Douglas, Durham City Harriers, won the blue riband 15km Derwentwater Trail Race in 56.29. Runner up was Ross Houston, Winning A1 Team, in 56.44 and making the podium in third place was Cees Van Der Land, from Holland, in 61.38. Local runners dominated the women’s 15km Race with Karen Bridge, from Penrith club Eden Runners winning both overall and first last veteran 40 in 73.44. Runner up was Cambridge & Coleridge AC’s Emma Buckland in 74.41, with Angela White, also from Eden Runners in 77.15. Oldest competitor in the race was 74 year old Charm Robson, from St Bees Triers, who won the Lady Veteran 70 in the 15km race. Representatives from 13 different nations took part in the event, including USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland. In the morning's 10km Derwentwater Trail Run, David McCabe, Trawden AC won the men's race in 39.56, and Helen Woodley, from Ulverston, winning the women's race for the second successive year in 45.21 MC John Alexander, donned a pirate costume to run in the 15km Challenge event, raising funds for the Mountain Rescue More than 50 children took part in the Fun Trails, all receiving a special finisher's medal. Singer / songwriter, Kev Kendal, first ran in the morning’s 10km event, then performed for an hour before the prize giving. The event was supporting the regional charity Nurture Lakeland, Fix The Fells and Keswick Mountain Rescue along with many national charities benefitting from runners raising funds through sponsorship.
